Responsible for management and stewardship of open lands throughout Cook County. The Ned Brown / Busse Woods forest preserve, just to the east of Schaumburg, is one of the county’s largest land holdings.

Friends of Busse Woods
An organizational whose “mission [is] to restore, restock, protect and preserve its natural lands together with their flora and fauna for the education, pleasure, and recreation of the public at Busse Woods.”

“Founded in 1963, Openlands protects the natural and open spaces of northeastern Illinois and the surrounding region to ensure cleaner air and water, protect natural habitats and wildlife, and help balance and enrich our lives.”

Poplar Creek Prairie Stewards
“The Poplar Creek Prairie Stewards began their work in 1989 as a joint effort between the Forest Preserve District of Cook County, Illinois, The Nature Conservancy, and the Illinois Nature Preserves Commission. The group has been working actively in the years since to return native plant communities to the Poplar Creek Forest Preserve in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, a suburb northwest of Chicago. Native tallgrass prairie and woodland communities are making a reappearance on this former farm site thanks to the dedication of the stewards.”

Salt Creek Greenway Association
“The purpose of the Salt Creek Greenway Association is to identify, preserve and promote the natural, historic, cultural and recreational resources of the Salt Creek Greenway, collaborate with partners on watershed sites, features, projects, activities and events and gather and distribute Greenway information as a public service.”

Salt Creek Watershed Network
Salt Creek Watershed, a local conservation organization, helps protect Salt Creek and bring awareness of watershed issues to the northwest suburban community.

Wild Ones
A national organization with several Chicago-area chapters that promote the use of native plants in the landscape. An important grassroots presence in local communities for sustainable landscape practices and environmental education.
